Electric Folding Scooter Buyer’s Guide
As you’ll have noticed, there’s a lot to choose from when it comes to your electric folding scooter. For this reason, we’ve written a buyer’s guide which gives you a rundown of the essential things you should be considering when you’re shopping for your scooter. In all cases, it really just depend on how you’re planning to use your folding electric scooter. Some features might be unnecessary, whereas some might be crucial.
Tires, Wheels, and Suspension
Where your electric folding scooter meets the ground is an often overlooked part of the machine. Scooters have small wheels compared to most other vehicles, so it’s important to think about how that’s going to affect your ride. Because the wheels are small, you’re going to usually feel the bumps in the road more. The bigger the wheels you choose, the smoother your ride will be. Small wheels can fit into potholes in quite a dangerous way so be careful if your streets aren’t well maintained.
If the terrain you’re going to be riding is especially bumpy, it would definitely be worth considering air-filled tires. Any pneumatic tires are going to improve the smoothness of the ride, although, it’s important that you keep them up to pressure, as low pressure can severely affect speed and range capacity. These tires can, of course, get punctures.
Suspension can often be a replacement for air-filled tires. In electric folding scooters, this is always found only on the rear wheels. The suspension will soften any bumps in the road considerably, but will add to the weight.
A motor is, unsurprisingly, at the center of an electric scooter. Traditional motors are chain-driven, but most electric folding scooters are now powered by hub motors. Hub motors are more difficult to repair, but they are much more efficient for electric scooters.
The wattage of your motor pretty much determines how fast you’re going to be able to go. It’s worth noting that all motors have a nominal wattage and a maximum wattage. Both of these also depend on how much battery capacity is available. A higher wattage is going to offer you a higher speed and more impressive acceleration.
Something worth considering is always the incline that each electric folding scooter can handle. If you live in a hilly place, then it’s definitely worth purchasing a scooter that can cope with high inclines.
Batteries matter because they determine your range. A 25V battery is probably the minimum you’re going to want. A high-level range can be offered by a 36V battery.
It’s worth looking at how long your battery will take to charge, and whether or not that will suit your planned usage. If you want to recharge at work, ensure your battery can charge quickly enough for that to be a reasonable expectation.
All batteries have a lifespan and will lose capacity over time. Smart charging systems can reduce this and will prolong lifetime.
Brakes are a crucial part of your electric folding scooter, especially if you have high max speed! Some brakes are operated simply by not accelerating, but it’s also possible to operate mechanical hand brakes. Often these are more intuitive and improve safety.
Regenerative (ABS) braking is available on a lot of the electric folding scooters with hub motors. It allows for electrical braking that restores battery power. It’s a powerful braking system that also maximizes battery efficiency.
A lot of the scooters offer corresponding apps which allow you to access data on how you’re using your bike. They can act as virtual speedometers or even toggle cruise control. This also means that you can keep your firmware up-to-date very easily. It’s worth checking what each app offers, as they differ from scooter to scooter.
Apps can offer you great additional functionality, but they’re not for everyone. If you don’t use your phone very often, it’s probably worth choosing an electric folding scooter that doesn’t depend on an app.
Electric folding scooters are a great way to get around. When you’re deciding which one you want to buy, the most important thing is to determine what you’re going to use it for. If you’re planning on using it for a couple of miles a day, to and from a subway station, then you’re going to need a different scooter than if you’re planning a ten-mile round commute.
There are loads of great options in the electric folding scooters we’ve surveyed, and all of them are great fun to ride. Any of these scooters will offer you a speedy way to get around without breaking a sweat
